As our economic crisis worsens, visits to the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties have increased and their supplies of food have decreased dramatically. The FoodBank is in a crisis situation. Recognizing the dire need, Circle BMW is pleased to announce that we are an official drop-off point for food donations for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

According to their website, the FoodBank collects donated and surplus food in its warehouse and distributes it to charities serving families in need. They also run several programs that address the root causes of hunger.

When you make a cash donation, out of every $1.00 raised, $.90 goes directly in support of programs that help the needy, and $.10 supports fundraising and administrative costs.

Here are some statistics regarding Poverty in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, taken from the FoodBank website:

  • Over 100,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean counties live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger at some time each month
  • 40,000 of them are children, 10,000 of them are elderly
  • Poverty increased from 5% - 6.3% in Monmouth County, and from 6% - 7% in Ocean County
  • To afford the fair market monthly rent of an average two-bedroom apartment ($1013), a minimum wage worker would have to work 3 full-time jobs, and a worker earning $7-$8 would have to work 2 full-time jobs
  • A family of 4 needs an annual income between $44,000 and $64,000 to be self-sufficient in Monmouth or Ocean counties
  • 26% of all households in Monmouth County, and 37% in Ocean County, earn less than $35,000 annually
