Run-Flat tires: An innovation in safety and security.

A flat tire is more than an inconvenience, it could be dangerous. You could get a flat in an unsafe location. And in the event of a blowout, you could lose total control of your vehicle within seconds.

Run-Flat tires are designed to minimize these situations, while eliminating the need for a spare. Today, BMW models with run-flat tires deliver BMW style performance, handling and comfort - yet in the event of a puncture, can still be driven to safety.

Run-flat Tires: Frequently asked questions

What are run flat tires?

BMW Run Flat Tires Runflat tires allow you to keep driving after a puncture or loss of air pressure. BMW uses run-flat tires that incorporate resilient, rubber-reinforced sidewalls specially designed to support the weight of the vehicle. Even without any air pressure in the tires, run-flats may allow travel up to 150 miles at speeds of up to 50 mph.

Figure A shows a conventional tire and wheel after a puncture. Figure B shows a run-flat tire system with SST (self-supporting tire) and EH2 (extended hump) wheel after a puncture.

BMW Run Flat Tires BMW original equipment run-flat tires can be identified by the letters RSC in a circle on the sidewall of the tires. BMW engineers have designed the suspension, brakes and other components of the vehicle to complement the characteristics of the run-flat tires, enhancing driving performance and comfort.

BMW vehicles equipped with run-flat tires also feature Extended Hump (EH2) rims. Even after a total loss of air, run-flat tires stay firmly attached to these specially designed rims.

In addition to peace of mind, what are the other benefits of run-flat tires?

In case of a sudden loss of pressure, run-flat tires offer the following advantages compared to conventional tires:

Steering effort is less with run-flat tires, resulting in better comtrol.

Run-flat tires have a significantly larger contact area with the road. This means better grip during turns and while braking.

The run-flat tire's sidewalls are not completely compressed. This can protect the rim while allowing the sidewall to flex when driving over uneven road surfaces, and providing a more comfortable ride.

If my run-flat tire is punctured, can it be repaired?

While some tire manufactures will allow tire repairs, BMW only recommends replacement of damaged tires.

Tire punctures can cause internal damage to the steel belts of the tire, which can result in rust forming on the steel belt material, deteriorating the tire over time.

At zero pressure, the tire's sidewalls will begin to wear in relation to the vehicle's operating conditions. Therefore, run-flat tires have a limited mileage range for zero-pressure operation. This mileage range cannot be guaranteed for a tire that has been previously repaired.

BMW only recommends replacement of damaged tires.
