2018 BMW M5

August 25th, 2017 by

Earlier this week, the 2018 BMW M5 was unveiled in Cologne. The sixth generation of this M Performance 5 Series variant, it breaks from the norm in several key ways while dialing up its power to 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. But with its standard M-tuned xDrive AWD system, its departure from the norm only opens up new dimensions.

BMW M is well aware of the RWD purists in its ranks of enthusiasts, so when they set out to develop the fastest M5 yet, they also made it more configurable. True, the car may default to AWD mode when it starts, but you can also select between 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD modes to gradually step down the power sent to the front wheels. In the latter, an active M Sport differential will send more power to the outer rear wheel when the car is drifted, while the xDrive system will only route power forward if absolutely needed. With all wheels in play, the 2018 M5 can hit sixty in 3.2 seconds.
